Team dissecting conversion data for a store redesign

Most struggling stores don’t have a traffic problem — they have a leak problem. Before you commission a full rebuild, run this diagnostic. In my experience, nine out of ten conversion issues live in just four places.

1. Product discovery

Shoppers who can’t find it can’t buy it. Audit your search with real queries from support tickets: does it tolerate typos, synonyms, and vague descriptions? Faceted filters should narrow, never trap — always show result counts and provide a graceful empty state with alternatives.

2. Product pages

The product page must answer every buying question above the fold: what is it, what does it cost all-in, when will it arrive, and what if I don’t like it? Lifestyle imagery, honest reviews with photos, and a sticky add-to-cart on mobile consistently outperform prettier-but-vaguer layouts.

3. Cart and checkout

This is where the money is won or lost. Keep the cart editable without page reloads, show shipping and taxes early, offer guest checkout first, and never clear a form on error. One fashion client recovered nearly a quarter of abandoned carts with a single change: showing the delivery date before the payment step.

4. Post-purchase

The thank-you page is prime real estate most stores waste. Order tracking, easy returns access, and a well-timed review request turn buyers into repeat customers — and repeat customers are five times cheaper than new ones.

  • Record five checkout sessions; fix what frustrates all five users first.
  • Show total cost — product, shipping, tax — before payment.
  • Test on a mid-range Android, not just your designer’s iPhone.

Redesign in priority order, measure each change, and let the leaks tell you where to dig next. Your store will thank you in revenue.
